August 2026: What Changes Are in Store for Testing Technicians and Their Lead Analyzers?
16 October 2026

Regulatory Developments Regarding CREP and DRIPP Lead Inspections

Prior to August 2026, an inspector was required to perform a CREP or a DRIPP using a portable X-ray fluorescence (XRF) device capable of analyzing at least the K-line of the fluorescence spectrum emitted by lead.

The goal: to detect lead, even when buried under various layers of varying thickness.

The inspector therefore had a choice between different XRF analyzers equipped with a source, such as the FEnX, Pb200i, XLp, etc. It was a matter of physics. Only these sources could comply with this law.

Regulatory Changes: What Is the Impact?

Under the new regulations, inspectors may use XRF devices whether equipped with a source or a tube only if they meet all four performance criteria. This assessment must be completed by April 1, 2027.

The criteria pertain to the instrument’s accuracy and the repeatability of measurements across a specific number of samples. This repeatability must be verified on various substrates: iron, wood, and plaster with both thin and thick coatings. Finally, measurements must also be taken at different temperatures: -5°C to +40°C.

Further details are needed regarding the implementation of this evaluation, as well as the nature of the coatings selected for testing.

We are coordinating with key industry stakeholders to obtain these details.

Detecting Lead

The purpose of this assessment is to ensure that any device used by a tester is capable of detecting lead in the field. This is to prevent lead poisoning and thus protect residents, particularly young children. It is also to protect workers who are on construction sites where lead is present.

This is the mission of lead inspectors. The XRF device is the tool used to fulfill this mission.

The Fondis Electronic Team

Our team consists of more than 15 people dedicated exclusively to real estate inspections. We handle not only the sale of equipment but also after-sales service: administrative support (ASNR procedures), training, maintenance, and a loaner fleet…
