OES Spectrometer : Fast and Accurate Analysis of Metals and Alloys for Industry
16 October 2026

In the metallurgical industry, the accuracy of a material’s chemical composition is a major concern for safety, quality, and traceability. To meet these requirements, the Physitek Group is expanding its product line with optical emission spectrometers (OES). Capable of identifying an alloy’s composition in a matter of seconds—particularly by measuring light elements (C, N, O, S, etc.)—these instruments enable manufacturers to verify their materials directly on-site or in the laboratory.

How Does an OES Spectrometer Work? The Principle of Optical Emission Spectrometry

Optical emission spectrometry is based on a simple principle: when a material is excited by a spark or an electric arc, the atoms it contains emit characteristic light. Each chemical element has a unique spectral signature.

The spectrometer analyzes this light spectrum and precisely identifies the elements present in the alloy. This technology can detect numerous elements, even in trace amounts.

The measurement is quick—often taking just a few seconds—and provides a physicochemical signature of the material. When compared to a reference database, this signature allows for the precise identification of the metal grade being analyzed.

What are the industrial applications for OES spectrometers?

OES spectrometers are now used in many industrial sectors:

  • Metal recycling: rapid sorting of scrap metal and identification of grades
  • Industrial quality control: verification of raw materials and finished products
  • Steel and foundry industries: monitoring of metal baths and verification of ingots
  • Automotive and aerospace industries: validation of high-performance alloys

They stand out for their ability to quantify light elements such as carbon, nitrogen, oxygen, and sulfur in various types of matrices. These portable spectrometers have revolutionized industry practices: analyses can be performed directly in the field with accuracy comparable to that of a laboratory.

Metal Power Line: Portable and Stationary OES Spectrometers for Every Need

In an effort to meet diverse industrial needs with ever-greater precision, the Physitek Group is expanding its product lineup with a new Metal Power series: OES spectrometers—both portable and stationary—suited for both field applications and laboratory analysis.
