FEnX VS FEnX2, which lead analyzer should you choose?
25 February 2026

In 2016, Fondis Electronic launched the FEnX for the first time: an X-ray fluorescence device designed to detect and analyze lead in paint. In 2021, a new version of this product was released: the FEnX2. It offers the same solution in an advanced version that, in addition to analyzing lead in paint, can also analyze lead in dust.

Two lead detection devices designed and manufactured in France by Fondis Electronic. What are their similarities and differences? In this article, we highlight the distinguishing features of each of the two lead analyzers to help real estate diagnostics professionals choose which lead analyzer best meets their needs.

Similarities between the two lead analyzers

Whether it’s the FEnX or the FEnX2, both analyzers developed by the Physitek Group subsidiary combine ergonomic and compact design with X-ray fluorescence technology to provide reliable and instant results, directly in the field.

Both solutions incorporate a sealed radioactive source, Cadmium 109, of 370 or 850 MBq, giving a lifespan of 3 or 5 years. At the end of this lifespan, the device needs to be re-sourced. Other similar features include a tiltable touch screen, integrated calibration system, and two measurement methods:

  • “Direct/quick measurement” mode for taking “raw” measurements directly.
  • The “indexed/detailed measurements” mode for compiling diagnostic files in advance and identifying areas for measurement once on site (saving time during the data processing stage).

The differences between FEnX and FEnX2

The press release published for the launch of FEnX2 lists the main new features. But the biggest difference between the two lead analyzers is the FEnX2’s ability to analyze the lead content in dust after work has been completed. If the diagnostician subscribes to the “dust kit” option, the FEnX2 will be supplied with a dedicated station. In addition to serving as a docking station and battery charger, this accessory allows dust sampling wipes to be analyzed.

The sample is placed in the compartment and the operator must manually perform a series of four measurements. Between each measurement, the operator turns the dial to rotate the sample 90°. After the four measurements, the device provides a reliable average. Watch the video…

Other features differentiate the new and old versions, such as the battery pack, which replaces the NITECORE batteries in the FEnX, the robustness of the measuring head, the significant improvement in the user interface, and the pre-work mode with assisted double accuracy check, which complies with the NFX 46035 standard.

Which lead analyzer for which diagnostician?

The FEnX2 is a device that is more suitable for professionals who are required to carry out post-work inspections (CAT) in addition to CREP and pre-work diagnostics. The FEnX analyzer, which does not come with the “dust kit,” is more suitable for real estate diagnosticians who only perform CREPs and pre-work diagnostics.
